Nathi Mankanyi of Nomvula talks to us about his long journey to stardom, his time in prison and his collaboration with Vusi Nova

Mention Nomvula and many South Africans will not only sit up but hum along as well. This track has become a signature tune that has defined Nkosinathi Mankayi, best known as Nathi. This is nothing short of a meteoric rise to stardom.

Nathi is a South African singer-songwriter and artist who hails from the humble beginnings of Mthatha, in the Eastern Cape. He became a phenomenon in South Africa’s music scene after the release of his debut album titled “Buyelekhaya” in 2014. This album reached platinum in just a few weeks following the release of its single track  “Nomvula”. This single made Nathi an instant hit and won him multiple Awards in the South African music galaxy. In the South African Music Awards (SAMA’s) and Metro FM Music Awards (MMA’s) Nathi scooped many awards in various categories. He told SANtv’s Lwando Notshe about growing up in a poor household, spending time in jail and his collaboration with Vusi Nova.
