From a preschooler who used to dress his pencils with tissue paper to being one of South Africa’s most highly regarded designers, Gert-Johan Coetzee story is one of a fairytale journey. The North-West born designer who attempted to make his first dress at the age of 13 years old had no idea then that he would dress national and global superstars from Bonang Matheba to Kourtney Kardashian. He has won multiple awards for Best Designer in South Africa and has earned himself enormous respect from his peers. Gert’s love for education and fashion has led him to offer young aspiring designers bursaries every year to attend the North-West School of Design where he also studied. He personally mentors these students and prepares them for their careers in the Fashion industry. It is for this reason he chose to dedicate his 2016 Spring/Summer collection to Education and he tells Lwando Notshe of SANtv why he chose to do so. Gert also shares how he collaborated with Visa SA in creating a collection for Magnum SA.
